UK’s First Brettstapel House
Located up a series of private and public access tracks, this two-storey house was designed by Gaia Architects, who used the same construction system on Acharacle Primary School. It is composed of a curved section (housing two of the three bedrooms, kitchen-dining room, study, and workshop) with a double-height entrance hall connecting this to a cube-shaped element containing the master bedroom and sitting room.
The curved section of the house also includes two quarter circle bays, also formed from Brettstapel.
Fabrication, delivery and erection of the superstructure elements, including walls, first floor, roof, windows, external doors, stairs and internal partitions will be carried out by Sohm Holzbautechnik, of Alberschwende, Austria, as Nominated Sub-contractors under a traditionally-appointed main contractor. The Brettstapel system being used is Sohm’s DiagonalDübelholz.
The house has been designed to achieve Passivhaus standard, and all principal rooms are arranged to maximise solar gain.
The benefits of using a Brettstapel construction system include:
•Speed of erection on site
•Pre-installation of electrical services and external fabric penetrations
•Guaranteed Passivhaus standard for the external fabric
•Very small tolerances
Brettstapel provides the surface finish to a number of rooms, with the remainder being finished in plaster skim on Fermacell. Ceilings are a combination of Brettstapel with acoustic perforations or shadow gaps, and plaster skim on Fermacell.
The house was completed in October 2011.
